Dark desert skies within a tank of gas

Real darkness is the rarest landscape in Southern California. You have to drive east for it, past the last of the sodium glow, until the Milky Way stops being a rumor. These are the places where I set up after moonset and let the desert do the talking.

    Joshua Tree

    Joshua Tree Milky Way - Quail Springs

    An International Dark Sky Park with Joshua trees and granite boulders waiting to anchor your foreground. Plan around the new moon; the galactic core sits best from June into July.

    Joshua Tree

    Jumbo Rocks

    Hundred-foot stacks of monzogranite that silhouette cleanly against the stars. Walk the campground loops at night and every turn offers a different arrangement of boulder and sky.

  3. Sunlit tan and gray badlands stretch in rippled ridges and eroded gullies below Font’s Point, with sharp, jagged cliffs dropping into the desert basin. The wide view emphasizes the layered, wind-carved terrain under bright golden-hour light.

    Borrego Springs

    Font's Point

    The badlands drop away beneath you and the sky takes over. The four-mile sand road keeps the casual visitors out, which is exactly what you want at 2 a.m.

  4. Looking up inside the Integratron’s wooden dome, the curved ribs and plywood panels radiate toward a circular skylight at the center, where soft pink light glows through the opening. Small rectangular windows along the lower edge add bright accents against the warm, honey-colored wood.

    Yucca Valley

    Integratron

    A white wooden dome built to Tesla's principles, sitting on a dead-flat desert floor in Landers. Under a starfield it looks like it finally makes sense.

    Twentynine Palms

    Arch Rock Trail

    A natural granite arch that frames the sky by design. Shoot through it with a wide lens and the arch becomes a window onto whatever the night is doing.
