The Argument for the 5 a.m. Alarm

The argument for the 5 a.m. alarm

Sunset gets the crowds. Sunrise gets the stillness, the mist, the water before the wind finds it. I have never once regretted the alarm, only the mornings I ignored it. These six places repay the dark drive every time.

  1. Wide morning panorama of Dana Point Harbor with calm turquoise water, Baby Beach curving along the left shoreline, and tall ships and sailboats clustered in the marina. The harbor is framed by steep coastal bluffs and a long breakwall, with soft reflections on the still inner water and open ocean beyond.

Dana Point Harbor - Baby Beach and Tall Ships

The harbor's inner water is glass at dawn, and morning light climbs the masts and rigging of the tall ships first. Baby Beach holds its turquoise even before the sun clears the bluff.

  2. A bronze relief map is mounted on a pink brick pedestal, showing the Cabrillo National Monument area with labeled features like Point Loma, San Diego Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. Strong morning sun casts crisp shadows across the textured surface and the surrounding walkway.

    Cabrillo National Monument Tide Pools

Time a winter negative tide for early morning and the pools at the tip of Point Loma are yours, anemones and sea stars in soft first light before the gates get busy.

  3. A large trail sign stands beside a sandy path at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, with scrub-covered dunes and a lone palm under a gray morning sky. The sign shows a map and bold warnings to stay on trails, with dog and bicycle prohibition symbols.

Two hundred bird species and the best of them move at dawn. The boardwalk over the inner bay puts terns and herons against still water before the joggers arrive.

  4. Dense pine branches fill the frame, their long needles layered against a bright, hazy sky. Sunlight filters through the canopy, creating a soft, misty morning feel with no visible path or meadow beyond the trees.

Mist settles over Stanfield Marsh most cool mornings and burns off fast. Between November and March you may share the dawn with a bald eagle working the shallows.

  5. A surfer drops into a steep emerald-green wave as it throws a thick wall of white spray across the left side of the frame. Deep blue open water fills the background, emphasizing the powerful, dramatic break at The Wedge.

    The Wedge

Morning light rakes across the shore break at the tip of the peninsula, and during a south swell the reflected waves stack twenty feet or more. Keep your distance and a fast shutter.

  6. Sunlit granite boulders fill the frame in a wide desert panorama, with Skull Rock’s rounded, skull-like shape rising near the center against a clear blue sky. The smooth tan rocks and scattered scrub create a layered, sculptural landscape around the trail.

By mid-morning there is a line of people at the pullout. At dawn the eroded granite face holds soft shadow in its sockets and you can work the composition alone.
