Solitude within two hours of twenty million people

Quiet is a resource here, and it is not evenly distributed. Some places stay empty because of a dirt road, a staircase, or simple inattention. I am careful with these. Go alone, go early, and leave them the way you found them.

    Laguna Beach

    Table Rock Beach

    The flat rock platform above the surf is a natural tripod stand for long exposures, and the staircase off Table Rock Drive filters out nearly everyone. Check the tide before committing.

  2. Sunrise floods a narrow desert trail with warm light, leading into a rocky canyon of tan scrub and steep brown hills. The bright sun creates lens flare on the left, while a small green oasis sits deep in the valley ahead.

    Twentynine Palms

    49 Palms Oasis

    Three exposed miles round trip keep this palm oasis quiet, and the trailhead sits outside the park entrances entirely. The green grove against barren hillsides is worth every step.

  3. Inside a restored one-room schoolhouse, rows of vintage wooden desks sit on a glossy red floor beneath cream-yellow walls and dark wainscoting. Sunlight streams through tall multi-pane windows, illuminating chalkboards, framed portraits, and an old teacher’s desk at the front.

    Redlands

    San Timoteo Canyon

    Rolling golden hills, ranch fencing, and old barns along a road with pullouts and no destination in particular. It is the rural California everyone assumes is gone.

  4. Paragliders float over a steep sandy bluff under a wide blue sky, with one canopy centered high in the frame and several others smaller in the distance. The sunlit hillside at the lower right shows eroded tan sandstone and sparse coastal vegetation.

    Broken Hill Overlook at Torrey Pines

    Most Torrey Pines visitors never take the Broken Hill Trail, which is how an ochre badlands overlook stays empty above one of the busiest reserves in the county.

The bright morning light gives the scene a crisp, open feel, though the water is mostly hidden by the vegetation.

    Carlsbad

    Carlsbad Lagoon (Batiquitos Lagoon)

    A flat three-mile trail along still water where herons and terns outnumber walkers. Morning reflections across the lagoon are the reward for showing up before the heat.

  6. Tight sandstone walls in a narrow slot canyon squeeze around a dim central passage, with bright afternoon sunlight streaming through a thin opening overhead. The weathered rock surfaces show smooth, rounded textures and pale tan layers in the glowing light.

    Borrego Springs

    Slot Canyon (Anza-Borrego)

    The dirt road and the high-clearance recommendation do the gatekeeping. Inside, the banded sandstone walls narrow to shoulder width and midday light drops in shafts.
