Golden Hour Date Nights, No Reservations Required
Sunset to dusk, no reservations required
The best date in Southern California is still the free one, the coast an hour before sunset and the walk after. These places carry an evening from golden hour into blue hour without a plan. Bring a jacket for when the light goes.
1San Clemente
San Clemente Pier
Walk down Avenida Del Mar as the town's Spanish colonial facades warm up, then out onto the 1928 pier. Dinner at the restaurant at the end watches the coast go dark toward San Diego.
2Laguna Beach
Crescent Bay Point Park
A small clifftop park above a crescent of sand, with Seal Rock offshore and the whole Laguna coastline in both directions. The railing at sunset is the point of the evening.
3San Diego
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
The name is not subtle and neither is the show. The stretch between Ladera Street and Luscomb's Point faces due west over sea caves and arches. Stand back from the edge; the sandstone is soft.
4Del Mar
Del Mar Bluffs and Powerhouse Park
Grass, bluffs, and the occasional Amtrak sliding along the cliff edge in the last light. The path south of 15th Street gives you the long view toward Torrey Pines.
5Laguna Beach
Heisler Park and Laguna Beach Tidepools
A landscaped cliff walk with gardens, public art, and stairways down to rocky coves. Start at Diver's Cove at low tide and let the path carry you into dusk.
6Riverside
Mount Rubidoux
A paved loop climbs a granite hill to a 360-degree view of the valley, a local sunset ritual for over a century. Time the summit for the last light and walk down under the afterglow.
