June Gloom Is a Softbox

The marine layer is not bad weather, it is a softbox

Every early summer the marine layer settles over the coast and most people stay home. I go out. Gray mornings flatten the light into something soft and even, and the ocean turns to pewter, and suddenly every pier and tidepool photographs like a quiet monochrome study.

  1. Scripps Pier stretches far into a calm blue Pacific under a clear sky, viewed from an elevated spot with trees framing the scene. Gentle surf curls along the sandy beach below, with a few people near the water and parked cars in the foreground.

    The thick concrete pilings were made for gray light. On an overcast morning a long exposure through them turns the surf to mist and the whole frame goes silver.

    Nearly two thousand feet of wooden pier vanishing due west into fog. Walk north on the sand at low tide and shoot the underside, where the gloom erases the horizon entirely.

    Ground fog settles over the restored tidal channels here on cool mornings and hangs until mid-morning. The levee trails put you right at water level, alone with the shorebirds.

    The palm-thatched surf shack reads differently without sunset color, more weathered, more honest. Gray skies let the rocky shore and the heavy surf carry the frame.

    The 230 steps thin the crowd and the overcast thins it further. At a negative tide the sea caves at the south end open up, and flat light is exactly what you want inside them.

    Layered sandstone strata and exposed reef under a low ceiling of cloud. When the tide drops below a foot, the reef becomes a textured foreground that needs no sun at all.
