6 Beaches That Earn the Golden Hour Drive

Where the last hour of light earns the drive

Golden hour on this coast is short and unsentimental. The light drops fast behind the water and you get maybe forty minutes of the good stuff. These are the beaches where I plant a tripod and wait, because the geometry underfoot deserves that hour.

  1. A high-angle view shows a wide crescent of sand tucked beneath steep, rocky headlands, with white surf lining the right edge and a paved coastal road and hillside homes on the left. Golden light warms the cliffs and roofs, creating long shadows across the bluff above the beach.

    When the waves recede over the exposed reef rock, the wet patterns catch the low sun like hammered metal. The headland cliffs behind you go amber at the same moment.

  2. Sunset light washes over Moonlight State Beach, with the sun sitting low over the Pacific and long shadows stretching across the wide sandy shore. A lifeguard tower, scattered beachgoers, and a tall palm silhouette the scene, with low bluffs and coastal buildings framing the right side.

    A wide, west-facing beach where the lifeguard towers stand in silhouette against the drop of the sun. Walk south at low tide and you trade the crowd for rock formations.

  3. High above Crystal Cove, a sweeping curve of pale sand hugs the rocky coastline, with turquoise water fading into deeper blue and small offshore rocks breaking the surface. A coastal highway and cliffside homes trace the shoreline under bright, clear daylight.

    The 1930s cottages take warm light like they were built for it. The uneven rocky shoreline draws a leading line straight out to the horizon just as it turns gold.

  4. Calm blue ocean at Swami’s Beach with small lines of surf and scattered surfers waiting and riding along the reef break. The view is framed by low coastal bluff vegetation in the foreground, with the horizon stretching across a hazy, open sky.

    The golden domes of the temple above the bluff pick up the late sun while surfers work the reef below. At low tide the exposed rock gives you a foreground worth the steep staircase.

    The pier points slightly south of due west, which means the sun sets almost inside its frame for much of the year. Get under the pilings at low tide for the vanishing point.

  6. Golden-hour light washes over Victoria Beach as the Pirate Tower rises from the rocky cliff at right, with people gathered on the tide-swept rocks below. Waves roll onto the dark sand, where wet, reflective patches and green-mossed stones catch the warm sunset glow.

    The 1926 concrete turret catches the last warm light against the shoreline. Time your visit to low tide and the sand pools around its base turn to mirrors.
