Castle Rock Trail

Castle Rock Trail

Big Bear Lake, CA

Castle Rock is a prominent granite formation on the south side of Big Bear Lake reached by a short but steep 1-mile trail. The rock offers panoramic views of the entire Big Bear Valley and surrounding San Bernardino National Forest. The formation itself serves as a dramatic foreground subject against expansive mountain vistas.

The trail does not waste your time. One mile up, but the kind of mile that makes you earn it - loose granite underfoot, the pines thinning as you climb, the air going cooler the higher you get. By the time you reach the rock itself, you have done real work, and the valley below has opened up in a way that feels like a reward rather than a view. I prefer this overlook in late September, when the summer haze has finally lifted off the basin and the lake reads true blue rather than the washed slate it can take on in August. Golden hour is when the granite earns its name. The formation goes warm and almost copper at the edges, and if you position yourself well, the rock becomes a foreground that anchors the whole composition - lake in the middle distance, the San Bernardinos folding away behind. Without that anchor the view can feel flat. With it, the photograph has weight. A wide lens is the obvious choice and the right one. But I have made portraits up here too, in the soft minutes just after the sun drops behind the western ridge, when the light goes ambient and the granite holds a warmth the sky has already given up. Bring sturdy shoes. Bring water. Give yourself enough time at the top to wait for the light rather than chase it.
